“International Gemological Academy” was established in this paradise island of gems because Sri Lanka (formally “Ceylon”) is the ancient international centre in the Gem industry and has the highest concentration of gem varieties on the Earth.
IGA was founded by HiroshaYahampath FGA (Great Britain) to conduct Gemological education, Training, Consultancy & Research in the Gem & Jewelry industry.
Industry oriented, Interactive & practical methods of teaching by the professionals who are actually in the international and Sri Lankan Gem & Jewellery industry is the unique feature of the IGA



Gemology Course

Business oriented Course for the beginners and those who are already in the Gem or Jewelry trade.
Duration : 3 months (part-time)

Learn about Gem varieties, their mining methods & Localities. Practice the use of Gem testing instruments. Learn how to separate natural, synthetic and treated gems. Develop the skills to handle & examine gems, assess the quality of the cut & the valuation of gems
Understand the markets for different gems, business procedures, regulations & the operation of the international and local gem industry. Learn from the professionals who are actually in the gem & jewelry industry.

 

Certificate in Gemology

Duration: 6 months (part-time)

Learn the Principals of Gemology. Properties of natural, synthetic & artificial gems. Origin, Occurrences & Localities of gems. Practice the use of Gemological instruments and identification of natural, synthetic and treated gems. Develop the skills to handle & examine gems, assess the quality of the cut & the valuation of gems.
Understand the markets for different gems, business procedures, regulations & the operation of the international and local gem industry. Learn from the professionals who are actually in the gem & jewelry industry.

Diploma in Gemology

Duration : 12 Months (part-time)

Industry oriented, Interactive modern Teaching methods and hands-on experience at the IGA is focused to develop a true professional Gemologist who has knowledge & skills beyond the text books.
Extensive Gemological theory & practical course of study with additional components such as Gem cutting practice, Heat treatment practice & field visits. Also jewelry basics & Awareness on advanced methods such as FTIR, LIBS, EDXRF etc.
Annual refresher program to update the knowledge on the latest developments in the science of Gemology and the industry.

Kids’ Gem time

Kids will Learn to handle gemstones , find  out how they were made in the earth & admire them in their amazing original forms, get to know about the gems which came from plants or animals, look inside a gem by a microscope, watch how gems play with the light to give stars, cat's eyes & play of colour. Have fun with gems, minerals & rocks. Every kid will get a booklet about gems & a set of gems to take home with them

International Gemological Academy conducts specialized staff training programs for Gem & Jewelry companies. Leading Gem & Jewelry establishments in Sri Lanka get their staff trained from the International Gemological Academy. Overseas companies combine the training program with the Gem tour to enhance the knowledge & skills of their staff members.

About the Founder of the International Gemological Academy

Hirosha Yahampath is a Consultant Gemologist & a Fellow of the Gemological Association of Great Britain. He has also done studies in Tourism & Hospitality marketing and International Trade .He was the Secretary of the Gemmologists Association of Sri Lanka , Former Secretary of the Association of Small & Medium Enterprises of Tourism in Sri Lanka and the Former Asst.Secretary of the Organization of Professional Associations of Sri Lanka. He is the Author of the First Gemology book in Sri Lanka.
As the Founder of the GemExpeditions Company, he organizes tours to Gem mines, Markets & workshops with many international and local students & visitors. Hirosha Yahampath owns YAHAMPATH HOLDINGS which is a company Exporting Gems & Jewelry to USA, Europe and many other countries. Therefore he has a sound knowledge of the Gem trade aspects in addition to the field experience which has made him a unique lecturer & consultant in the Gem industry.
